    @mcowger I found the section (archive.org/details/unixsystemv386re00amer/page/n829/mode/2up) and it looks like /usr had indeed stopped being a user directory at that point, with the purpose being to share binaries and other files between multiple computers. [...]

      @mcowger This setup would allow individual computers to have smaller hard disks due to not needing their own copies of all the binaries. Thanks for this learning opportunity!
