    @ottokruse @TejasKumar_ @kentcdodds It’s not covered in the book but Wikipedia says var is “variable” because it contains files that change frequently and opt is supposed to be from System V’s package manager

      @ottokruse @TejasKumar_ @kentcdodds CORRECTION: The SVR4 manual (archive.org/details/unixsystemv386re00amer/page/n829/mode/2up) says: /var is the “[r]oot of a subtree for varying files. Varying files are … unique to a machine but can grow to an arbitrary size,“ (e.g. log files). /opt is the “[r]oot of a subtree for add-on application packages.”
