@gruber I was also surprised to learn how recent the term cherry-pick is (daringfireball.net/linked/2020/08/07/cherry-pick) and I looked it up on Google’s ngram viewer to see its popularity. It initially appears in the 1840s, increases in the 20s, and grows even more in the 70s books.google.com/ngrams/graph?year_start=1500&year_end=2019&content=cherry-pick%2C+cherry+pick&smoothing=10&corpus=26&case_insensitive=on&direct_url=t4%3B%2Ccherry%20-%20pick%3B%2Cc0%3B%2Cs0%3B%3Bcherry%20-%20pick%3B%2Cc0%3B%3BCherry%20-%20pick%3B%2Cc0%3B.t4%3B%2Ccherry%20pick%3B%2Cc0%3B%2Cs0%3B%3Bcherry%20pick%3B%2Cc0%3B%3BCherry%20pick%3B%2Cc0%3B%3BCherry%20Pick%3B%2Cc0#t4%3B%2Ccherry%20-%20pick%3B%2Cc0%3B%2Cs0%3B%3Bcherry%20-%20pick%3B%2Cc0%3B%3BCherry%20-%20pick%3B%2Cc0%3B.t4%3B%2Ccherry%20pick%3B%2Cc0%3B%2Cs0%3B%3Bcherry%20pick%3B%2Cc0%3B%3BCherry%20pick%3B%2Cc0%3B%3BCherry%20Pick%3B%2Cc0

This doesn’t cover meaning or anything outside of books though so it’s possible the term started off with a different meaning or as informal language that would not be written down.
